7,000 km on foot and gathering 102,000 PLN for a hospice – this is a new challenge for Darek Strojewski, a resident of Ursynów, who went on a walking tour of Europe for the second time. This time the target is Nordkapp, the northernmost Norwegian municipality.
He already has a walking trip from Warsaw’s Ursynów to Lisbon. In total, he covered four thousand kilometers. After returning to Warsaw, he rested only a month and set off on another journey.
I started at Cape Marroqui in southern Spain. I finish in Northern Norway at Cape Nordkapp. This was over 7,000 kilometers to cover. Assuming that I will cover 25 kilometers a day, we should reach our destination in 280 dayssay Darek
He gets a huge kick in the people he meets along the way and the help they offer. In all this, Darek has a unique goal – to help those who dream of a similar trip, but for health reasons they can’t do it.
My “walk” is more than just a trip, because it involves helping the Ursynów Hospice, for which I aim to collect 102,000. zł. This is really the biggest motivator. Each payment is like a pair of extra legs. At some point you do not want to stop goingsays Darek
The journey will end before the celebration of the 102nd anniversary of Poland regaining independence. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate this day by helping such a special place with 102,000 PLNwrites Darek
It is worth noting that the entire amount collected will be transferred to the hospice. Money collected at no stage passes through his hands. They are transferred directly between the collection platforms and the hospice. – I only see the payment counter, I am happy with what I see with my eyes – says Darek, who travels with his own budget and help from friends. However, anyone who would like to treat Darek to accommodation or dinner can do it on the Patronite platform
2 legs and 4 paws
Darek is not alone, because he is accompanied by a mongrel called Pindol, whom he adopted six years ago from the Warsaw Na Paluchu Hostel. As he says, he was not entirely sure that the dog would manage. The first kilometers were Pindol’s test. However, the dog passed him positively and walked with Darek until the finish. In total, they covered 4000 km. Now, almost twice as much waiting for them, at least 7000 km.
How does a dog endure such wandering? – I do not feel tired when during the road frivolously runs for hours in the surrounding fields. When dusk falls or even when we make a break on the way, it immediately falls into the “resting – don’t wake me up” mode. Thanks to this, he is run out, but also controls his own fatigue, and when he informs that he is tired, we immediately pause _ – Darek tells us. And he adds that their duo brings a smile to many faces. – I have the impression that thanks to him my path is easier. He makes contact with people very quickly and I would not like to be subjective, but he has something that makes him want to stroke him and say hello to him – adds Darek.
One pair of shoes and a tent
What’s the hardest part of all this? As Darek says, his trip is not an all-inclusive vacation. He is prepared for difficult moments, but thanks to this readiness he is getting stronger with every step. His first trip to Santiago de Compostela is 4000 km and one pair of worn-out shoes. – I went all the way in one pair of shoes, not counting 2 weeks alternating with sandals. The shoes have proved so good that I have the same model this time. Along the way, I “learned” how to walk. Because of this change, cuts are alien to me. My feet are prepared and properly equipped – says Darek. The only thing he complains about are the cold nights that are not conducive to restful sleep and it has so far worried him the most. Mostly they sleep in a tent together.
More and more fans
Every day the group of fans of the Warsaw pilgrim from Ursynów is growing, who are an additional motivator for him. Darek has a lot of meetings, interviews and appearances on television. – It’s a very nice experience. I would not call it ‘popularity’, but only the promotion of my journey and the place that is a hospice – says Darek. – People support me in social media, and meeting some people live during a speech at the town hall was very encouraging – he adds.
Dariusz also has full support from the mayor and officials of the Ursynów district, who after the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, organized a special meeting of Darek with the inhabitants of Ursynów. – On December 4, 2019, an open meeting was held at the Ursynów District Office, during which Darek Strojewski talked about his previous trip and presented photos – reminds Jakub Fiałek from the Ursynów town hall, who ensures that the district will continue to support its citizen.
The deputy mayor of the district is also a fan: – Darek is a positively crazy man who is not afraid to take on non-standard challenges. It is worth supporting such people and what they do. The more that Darek does himself teaches us how to support others. He adopted a dog with whom he is marching through Europe from a shelter. May more such people in Ursynów – says Bartosz Dominiak.
