Later this month, all padlocks fastened there by lovers will disappear from the Tumskiego Bridge in Wrocław. This is how Wrocław’s tradition ends. The city gives Wrocławers only a few more days to remove their padlocks themselves. Then the workers will do it. In mid-July the renovation of the bridge begins. Workers will take over the construction site at the end of the next week. The bridge will then close.
The bridge structure has not undergone renovation since the war. After the war, sidewalks and corrosion protection were made there, the bridge was cleaned and it was painted with a turquoise coating. The last time such work was performed was over 20 years ago and it is necessary to re-commission it – explains Ewa Mazur from the Board of Roads and Maintenance.
The plan is to clean and repair the stone supports of the bridge, repair the roadway, repair pavements (asphalt will be replaced with stone tiles), sandblasting and make a new coating for the steel parts of the bridge. Damaged and corroded bridge components will be replaced. – We will also restore historic lanterns at the limestone statues of saints John the Baptist and Kinga. During the renovation of lighting in Ostrów Tumski, we supplemented these places with gas lanterns, but the conservator’s wish is to restore the lanterns visible in old photos and engravings. During the renovation, we will also replace the object’s illumination – adds Mazur.
For the renovation to take place, the padlocks must disappear from the bridge. That is why ZDiUM appeals to those in love to remove them themselves.
If they don’t, they will be removed anyway. The locks will be available at the ZDiUM headquarters but only for a short amount of time.
How many padlocks hang on the bridge? It is not known – It’s difficult to estimate their number or weight – says Mazur. – We encourage everyone to take their padlock directly from the bridge now, because putting a few tons of padlocks in order to find your padlock will be quite a heavy and dirty job. Everyone will be looking for their own property and many padlocks are rusted – she adds.
The disassembled padlocks for the bridge will not return. After renovation, it will probably be possible to put padlocks on the bridge again, although officially it was never allowed, because – as Ewa Mazur explains – the Bridge is a historic building.
