It is confirmed. Wavelo city bikes are disappearing from Krakow and will definitely not appear on the streets this year. The new possible date is spring 2021.
At the beginning of February there was information that Wavelo would return to the streets this spring. BikeU, the current operator of Wavelo, was in talks with an external company that was to take over bikes and stations. However, this will not happen, because the talks ended in a failure. BikeU and Wavelo are definitely disappearing from Krakow. The bicycles were taken from the streets before the winter season started and now the stations will be dismantled.
The city must look for a new operator. Officials say they want a return of a city bike company that works just like Wavelo. You may be able to find an operator next spring. One thing is certain – in 2020 we will not ride on the urban two-wheelers.
Let us remind you that Wavelo has been operating in Krakow since 2016. It enjoyed great popularity among residents and tourists. It was then that the authorities of Krakow signed a contract for running city bike rental for up to eight years, until 2024. As part of it, BikeU made available to residents at one time even 1,500 bikes available at 168 stations located throughout the city.
The Krakow city bike solution was quite innovative. The city paid only one zloty a month for each bike, i.e. 1500 zlotys.
At the end of 2019, however, BikeU suddenly submitted a letter to the Krakow City Hall terminating the contract for operating a Wavelo bicycle rental company.
