The Wrocław Civil Registry Office has consistently refused to give the PESEL number to 11-month-old Azaar – who was born in Majorca. All because the birth certificate contains the names of two mothers. – This is a testimony of a malfunctioning Polish law – commented MP Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk.
The girls’ mothers got married in Majorca two years ago. Both are Polish. After the birth of the daughter, the women unsuccessfully applied to the Wrocław office for a PESEL number, indicating that without a father named or the lack of ‘unknown’ father, the girl cannot, among others travel or receive public health care in Poland. Officials explained the inability to transcribe the child’s birth certificate, because it contains data of two people of the same sex. – It was even suggested to change this birth certificate in such a way as to remove one of the mothers – said Alina Szeptycka, the mother’s representative.
Left-wing politician, Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk submitted a parliamentary request to the President of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk. As she emphasized, according to Polish law it would be better if an unknown father had been entered in place of one of the parents. The data of two mothers means that Azer cannot be given a PESEL number. – This is discrimination – she said
“Two married Poles in Spain have been trying for months to give their daughter PESEL in Wroclaw Registry Office. The girl without an entry in the registers is de facto treated as a stateless person. Today I intervened in this matter with President Jacek Sutryk” – summed up a Twitter Member. “I hope that the president of my city will carry out activities that will improve Azara’s situation,” she added.
