A new monument was unveiled in the Polish capital on 10th April 2018 as the country marked eight years since an air crash that killed the Polish President Lech Kaczyński and Maria Kaczyńska, top state officials, military commanders, members of foreign service and plane crew. The event still continues to cause debate and conspiracy theories.

The Monument to the Victims of the Smolensk Plane Crash is a set of stairs made with black granite. The monument has a stepped shape, evoking associations with the gangway of the plane.
For years, there has been a discussion about where the commemoration of the crash should be placed. Various proposals were made – the area in front of the Warsaw Garrison Command, around ul. Moliera and ul. Focha or the area in front of the Presidential Palace.
