Next year the city of Warsaw will be celebrating the centenary of the Warsaw Battle. The city wants to build a monument, the government too. There are ongoing talks of two monuments being erected in the capital at the same time, both commemorating the same event.
Once again the concept of building a triumphal arch commemorating the Battle of Warsaw 1920 returns. Three years ago Jan Pietrzak thought about it, then Jan Żyliński showed public support for the plan. One of the richest Poles wanted to create an arch with a viewing terrace and a shopping gallery. Despite meetings with the President of Poland and the Warsaw authorities, Żyliński’s proposal was lost.
The idea for a monument commemorating the Battle of Warsaw returned this year. In July, the Warsaw council agreed that it would stand on Na Rozdrożu Square, in the place of the current fountain. The monument design is to be selected in the competition. The city authorities want the monument to stand next year, for the centenary of the famous battle.
The demand for building the monument is growing. On Friday, answering a question from an Internet user, Prime Minister Morawiecki also announced the construction of a monument. – The Monument to the Battle of Warsaw should already have been built 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 10 years ago, it should be next year at all costs – replied Mateusz Morawiecki.
W historii Europy i świata były chwile decydujące. Bitwa Warszawska 1920 była jedną z nich. Polacy ocalili ojczyznę i cały kontynent. Wszyscy mamy wobec nich wielki dług wdzięczności. Bez nich nie byłoby nas, a także Europy, jaką dzisiaj znamy. Zasługują na wielkie upamiętnienie.

The prime minister even admitted that he had donated money to the foundation collecting funds for the construction of the arch.
Will there be two monuments?
The capital city hall were publicly asked whether the governmental idea was agreed with the city. This is their response:
As the councilors of Warsaw decided a few months ago, the city plans to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw 1920. Therefore, this year we will announce a competition for the design of the monument that will stand on Na Rozdrożu Square – Ewa Rogala from the town hall replied. Moreover, the composition of the jury has already been agreed. It turns out that the project announced by Morawiecki is the same that the city is already implementing. The jury of the competition will include a representative of the Ministry of Culture.
We are surprised by the statement that there is no cooperation between the city and the government – says a spokeswoman for the capital city hall.
She also adds that President Olszewski participates in meetings with the ministry regarding the monument. Its shape and form (arch, monument, fountain etc.) will be selected in the competition. The construction of the pedestal commemorating the Warsaw Battle is to end next year, i.e. the centenary of the event.
