Traffic lights have been installed in Ursynów to improve security and capture the attention of those with telephones. A projector directs red light to the level of the pavement, so that thoughtful people or those using a smartphone do not enter the road by mistake. This is the first such pedestrian crossing in Warsaw.
The problem of “smartphone zombies” in Warsaw is well known. The term “smartphone zombies” is given to people who are only staring at the phone screens when walking and do not pay attention to the surrounding reality. They do not look at the street, do not look at traffic lights, do not look at oncoming trams. This careless behavior has often been the cause of accidents, often tragic. In Ursynów, and more precisely on Al. KEN (P&R Stokłosy), a pedestrian crossing was created to improve safety and capture the attention of those with phones in their hand.
An additional light is mounted on the traffic light pole, giving a stream of red light to the floor. It is a solution that additionally directs red light to the level of the pavement, so that people who are not paying attention or using a smartphone can see a warning light on entering the crossing – The greatest effectiveness of this solution is visible at dusk and evening. The new solution is intended for pedestrians who do not pay attention to the crossing color and enter the road.explains Karolina Gałecka from the City Roads Authority
For now, such a solution has been introduced for a period of several months in the form of pilot scheme – We will observe whether it works or fulfills the assumed goal – adds Karolina Gałecka. It is not yet known whether such transitions will also appear in other places.
This is not the first time that attention has been brought to the dangers of not paying attention to the road and crossing lights. In 2019 Warsaw Tramway campaign wrote at the entrance of some cross roads “Put down your smartphone and live”
This was placed in 200 different locations around the city.
